Default iTunes Third Party API

Apple created a new support document outlining the fact that Third Party Media Devices may not work in future version of iTunes. My question is, why cant Apple create an API that allows us developers to make use of iTunes for third party media player? It may hurt sales of iPods etc but my thoughts are that the extra business from music and video sales would outweigh the iPod revenue loss?!?

With all the technology we have you would think that they can make something very compatible instead of buying something new, all the time and the stuff you bought last month no longer works.
